That makes it the usual answer for a converted garage, an ADU, a bonus room over the garage, or an older San Diego house that never had ducts. Each head is its own zone, so you are not paying to condition the whole house to fix one hot room. They also run as heat pumps, which means the same unit covers the handful of cold weeks we get. The economics are simple. A dirty condenser coil or a low charge makes the system run longer for the same result, so you pay for it monthly on the bill whether or not anything has broken yet. A tune up finds the worn capacitor, the drifting charge and the blocked drain while they are still small, and on gas heating we check for carbon monoxide at the supply vents. You keep the written findings, a record of what we measured and what we would watch. It is not air conditioning and it does not replace it. In San Diego the evening air outside is usually cooler than the air your house has been holding since the afternoon, and the fan is what trades one for the other. Open a few windows, run the fan, and the house sheds that heat without the compressor doing the work. Sizing is done by the airflow the house needs rather than by room count, and the attic has to have enough vent area to exhaust it or the fan just fights itself. San Diego suits one well, because heat pumps lose efficiency in genuine cold and we do not get much of it here. For a house facing both a new AC and an aging furnace, one heat pump replaces two pieces of equipment and takes gas combustion out of the heating side of the house. We size and install ducted heat pumps and ductless mini splits in homes, new construction and light commercial, on Daikin, Trane, Carrier, Bryant, Mitsubishi and Fujitsu equipment. A San Diego attic can sit far hotter than the outside air on a summer afternoon, and that heat radiates down through the ceiling for hours after sunset. That is why upstairs rooms stay warm long after it has cooled off outside. We measure the attic before anything is quoted, find where the heat pools, and check the soffit and eave intake, because a fan with nowhere to pull from just fights itself. When those runs sit in an attic they are in the hottest space in the building, which is the worst place to be losing air you already paid to cool. Eddie measures airflow at every register before anything is opened up, so the starved runs are identified rather than guessed at, then traces those runs for leaks, crushing and undersizing. Runs get replaced and sealed, or dampers and controls go in where zoning is the better answer.
